It is with deep sadness that we share the news of the passing of the last of our founding members, Professor Aubrey Parsons, who peacefully passed away yesterday morning. Professor Parsons dedicated over 50 years to the Perfumery, Cosmetic and Flavour industries, contributing significantly to their development and growth, with the experience, knowledge, and passion that he was always renowned for. As a Founder Member of the Society of Cosmetic Chemists of South Africa (Coschem) in 1977, Aubrey played a pivotal role in shaping the Society’s direction with his positive impact on members and the industry alike. His exceptional leadership was underscored by his five terms as President of Coschem. During his tenure as a Society Council member, Aubrey was instrumental in launching and developing Coschem’s education programmes, helping to lay the foundation for the Society’s ongoing commitment to scientific learning and professional growth. Famous for his engaging and entertaining presentation style, Aubrey was a much sought-after speaker, not only in South Africa but all across the globe, speaking at conferences and universities in Africa, Asia, Europe, Iceland, and South America, bringing expertise and charisma to audiences worldwide. In recognition of his enduring and lifelong contributions and influence, Aubrey was awarded the distinguished title of Honorary Member of Coschem. In spite of this and other remarkable achievements, Aubrey remained a humble soul, whilst possessing dynamism and a true wealth of knowledge. His passion for education and the development and mentorship of young scientists in our industry was unwavering and inspirational. Aubrey was not only a pioneer in our industry but also a generous and steadfast supporter of The Society throughout the many years of his involvement, and his influence will continue to be felt in the future by those whose lives he touched and the foundations he helped to build. We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and all those who had the privilege of knowing him. He will be deeply missed, but his legacy will remain a guiding light in our continued pursuit of excellence in cosmetic science.
