After completing a Master’s degree in Organic Chemistry, Chloé joined Natura-Tec, where she have spent the past two years gaining experience in both R&D and technical sales. She initially contributed to the development of innovative natural cosmetic ingredients within the R&D laboratory, before transitioning into a Technical Sales Representative role. In this position, she represent Natura-Tec to clients and partners, with a strong focus on promoting natural, sustainable, and high-performance solutions.
ABSTRACT
The senses connect us to life; they allow us to perceive the world around us. Today, to the 5 main senses: hearing, smell, taste, touch and sight, we can add 2 new fundamental considerations: intuition and the sense of others, which are now recognized as crucial.

The transfer linking neuroscience to cosmetics and the awakening of one's emotions is simple: the sensory experience will be major, the use of textures of great elegance, subtle and evolving, also, the use of natural ingredients obtained with sustainable and ethical techniques will guide motivation and decision-making and finally confidence in their effectiveness to hydrate, repair, heal to bring overall well-being.
The ethnic hair care industry is evolving through the fusion of science, cultural awareness, and sustainability. It meets the growing demand for inclusive, effective, and sensorially satisfying products.

Textured hair—curly, coily, and kinky—has specific needs due to its dryness, porosity, and fragility. These unique characteristics require advanced care that respects hair biology. Innovations now highlight the importance of the scalp-brain connection. The scalp, part of the sensory system, communicates with the brain via neuropeptides and neurotransmitters. A balanced scalp promotes hair growth and emotional well-being. This holistic approach is redefining ethnic hair care.

This is where our Abyssinian-phytosterol complex shines. This multifunctional active ingredient brings a luxurious “cocooning” sensoriality to formulas. Upon application, it creates a silky, velvety finish that evokes comfort and self-care—two crucial elements in modern hair rituals. This vegetable active not only deeply protects and conditions both hair and skin, but it also supports color retention, moisture replenishment, and pigment dispersion, making it ideal for colored and chemically treated hair. It provides thermal protection up to 230°C, safeguarding the hair from heat styling damage. Additionally, it helps shield hair from prolonged exposure to seawater and UV rays, preserving hair integrity without weighing it down and maintaining a smooth, touchable texture.
But its innovation goes further. This intelligent ester has recently been revealed as a natural SPF booster for oils and creams, adding an extra layer of skin protection from UV damage. This enhancement aligns with the increasing focus on multifunctional, minimalist, and sustainable beauty routines.

In parallel, our bioactive combination of Nannochloropsis oceanica microalgae and sapote oil targets another essential need: boosting the strength, density, and growth of fragile hair fibers. Derived from marine biotechnology, it reflects a new wave of cosmetic science, combining eco-responsible sourcing and clinical performance. Rich in powerful active molecules, including triterpene alcohols like lupeol, plant sterols, including cholesterol (a particularly rare constituent in the plant kingdom), and omega-6 essential fatty acids, this highly concentrated active ingredient offers targeted efficacy at the follicular level. Cultivated using a virtuous process that uses renewable energy and promotes water recycling, the microalgae are grown under optimized conditions to ensure maximum concentration of these bioactives while minimizing environmental impact.

Tested in-vivo, this compound works by energizing the scalp and stimulating the hair bulb, encouraging healthy regrowth while reducing breakage, hair loss is reduced by 50% after 5 months of use. The result is visibly stronger, thicker, and more resilient hair—qualities that not only enhance appearance but also boost self-confidence, a major emotional driver in beauty care.
Together, these two active ingredients illustrate a synergistic approach to ethnic hair care. They don't just care for hair: they stimulate the senses, soothe the scalp, protect the skin, and improve mood. This is the essence of the neuroscience-inspired "Mood Boost" concept: products that promote emotional well-being, relaxation, and a deeper connection with oneself.

It is important to highlight that these bio-based ingredients were developed through our industrial expertise in green chemistry, with a strong focus on biodegradability, renewable sources, and ethical practices. These two ingredients reflect our commitment to responsible investment and innovation: the cultivation of Abyssinian oil has been relocated to reduce logistics and consequently lower our CO₂ emissions, while our microalgae technology represents a model of sustainable processing for the future. Green energy is produced by recovering all organic production waste and transforming it into bio-carburant, thanks to a patented on-site power station. The water used during cultivation is reused, thus preserving the integrity and quality of the agricultural environment. Finally, the carbon dioxide produced in the energy station is directly converted into oxygen by the microalgae, resulting in a positive final carbon footprint.

This approach aligns with the growing demand for sustainability in the beauty industry—an expectation that includes ingredient transparency, low environmental impact, and a positive social contribution.

In this new era, ethnic hair care is no longer considered a niche: it's a laboratory of innovation where the boundaries of science, emotion, and sustainability are being redefined.
The future lies in formulas that care holistically: for hair, scalp, skin, and soul. Thanks to cutting-edge ingredients like these two natural actives, the industry embraces the full spectrum of performance, utility, and pleasure.
Introducing ethnic hair care: reinvented, reimagined, and empowered.

Distinguished Delegates, guests, and industry colleagues.

As we draw this incredible gathering to a close, I stand here with deep gratitude at what we have achieved together over the past two days.

On behalf of the Society of Cosmetic Chemists South Africa, I would like to extend my sincerest thanks to each and every one of you — our delegates, our generous sponsors, our dedicated members, and, of course our scientific committee. Your commitment and participation has been the driving force behind the success of this conference.

We have had the privilege of hosting both local and international speakers— pioneers and rising voices in the field — who took the stage to share groundbreaking research, transformative innovations, and the latest developments shaping the future of cosmetic science. Your insights have sparked meaningful conversations, ignited new ideas, and inspired us all to push the boundaries of what is possible in our field.

This conference has reminded us of something vital: that science thrives not in isolation, but through collaboration. It is through open dialogue, shared knowledge, and collective effort that we move forward as a cosmetic science community. Whether we are formulating in the lab, exploring novel ingredients, or addressing sustainability and safety, our progress depends on how we learn from and support one another.
Let us take the ideas and connections from this event and continue the momentum in our own work — committed to innovation, excellence, and impact.

Thank you once again for your presence and we look forward to seeing how the seeds planted during this conference will grow in the months and years ahead.

Safe travels, and until next year.

Thank you
Stephanie Gompel Ratsiane
