CSIR Advanced Functional Materials-Cosmetics group
 
The strategic intent of the CSIR Advanced Functional Materials-Cosmetics group is to conduct translational research to develop sustainable and environmental/skin-friendly functional ingredients for topical formulations. Our research focus is on new structural and functional ingredients/additives for formulations as well as delivery systems for topical active ingredients to improve physical and chemical stability, and to control skin bioavailability and safety through slow release and manipulating skin penetration characteristics. The research group also offers a variety of technical and scientific testing services/support to the cosmetic industry/SMMEs. 
  • Ingredient functionality assessment (Instrumental)
  • Ingredient characterisation (available techniques: XRD, SEM, TEM, FTIR, TGA, DSC, UV-Vis, etc.)
  • Transdermal penetration studies (straM®)
  • Prototype formulation development

The Photobiology Laboratory offers services to the cosmetic industry to ensure the safety and efficacy of topically-applied products.
All studies are conducted under protocols which are approved by the University's independent review board, the Sefako Makgatho University's Research Ethics Committee (SMUREC). SMUREC follows the ICH GCP guidelines and SOPs and comply with ethical standards and regulations for the protection of human subjects in research. The Laboratory is situated within the School of Pharmacy, Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University (SMU) , and thus has access to the pharmacists, microbiologists, virologists and biochemists who are professional staff of the School, as well as a full range of medical specialist from SMU.  The Laboratory also offers the option to register studies with SAHPRA, if required.
 
In vitro SPF and Fabrics UPF tests are offered with the Optometrics SPF 290. There is a fully-equipped thermostatically controlled spa bath for water-resistance SPF tests. A range of specialized instruments is available for dermatological assessment. Moisture efficacy, personal wash and pigmentation studies rely on our internationally trained visual evaluators.

Future Cosmetics CC is a focused, boutique dermatological clinical research organisation for the cosmetic industry. The company was established in March 2001 by Heibrie le Roux, the founder and current Managing Member. Future Cosmetics was formally registered on 10 August 2001 as a closed corporation in its current format. Heibrie is approaching 30 years of experience in the Cosmetic Industry, having worked for various cosmetics manufacturing companies before she founded Future Cosmetics. The scope of our services includes cosmetic safety testing, sun protection factor (SPF) testing, in vitro UVA testing as well as product efficacy testing and validation.
Future Cosmetics vision is to be the leading cosmetics dermatological clinical research organisation in Africa. Future Cosmetics accomplish this by delivering continuous, personalised service to our South African and international customer base. We utilise world-renowned, well-published and accepted instrumental systems and equipment to ensure innovative efficacy and claim substantiation testing for cosmetics and related products. We focus on quick turnaround times to ensure that customers can meet their commitments and all our clinical testing is performed in line with international standards.

Further, Future Cosmetics, has an excellent understanding of product formulations as well as cosmetic raw materials, which play a vital role in the outcome of cosmetic clinical studies. Future Cosmetics offers consulting services during the initial stages of the product development life cycle and are resourced to guide customers through the selection of raw materials process. This ultimately assist with the correct raw materials selection in support of their final claims, thus taking our customers on their journey from concept to final product. Our volunteer data base and study panellists are diverse in nature and thereby ensure appropriate volunteer selection across the range of Fitzpatrick skin types I to VI.

Future Cosmetics conducts a wide array of dermatological cosmetic clinical studies. These cosmetic trials can be performed on hair care, skin care, face care and body care products. All different types of testing are performed using world renowned, well published and accepted instrumental systems in order to yield results of the highest scientific level. Standard, as well as custom designed, clinical testing services are performed to comply with specific customer protocol designs and requirements.
