The strategic intent of the CSIR Advanced Functional Materials-Cosmetics group is to conduct translational research to develop sustainable and environmental/skin-friendly functional ingredients for topical formulations. The Photobiology Laboratory offers services to the cosmetic industry to ensure the safety and efficacy of topically-applied products.
All studies are conducted under protocols which are approved by the University's independent review board, the Sefako Makgatho University's Research Ethics Committee (SMUREC). SMUREC follows the ICH GCP guidelines and SOPs and comply with ethical standards and regulations for the protection of human subjects in research. The Laboratory is situated within the School of Pharmacy, Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University (SMU) , and thus has access to the pharmacists, microbiologists, virologists and biochemists who are professional staff of the School, as well as a full range of medical specialist from SMU. The Laboratory also offers the option to register studies with SAHPRA, if required. In vitro SPF and Fabrics UPF tests are offered with the Optometrics SPF 290. There is a fully-equipped thermostatically controlled spa bath for water-resistance SPF tests. A range of specialized instruments is available for dermatological assessment. Moisture efficacy, personal wash and pigmentation studies rely on our internationally trained visual evaluators. |
